Intermediate Care Technician

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Program is a program designed to hire transitioning service, National Guard, Reserve, and Veteran corpsmen, combat medics and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers as an integral part of the medical team. Candidates generally qualify based on U.S. Armed Forces experience or equivalent education. May perform other related technical health care procedures under the supervision of the ED Physicians.

**Qualifications:**
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/27/2026. This position has an Individual Occupation Requirement (IOR). You must meet the following: Possess technician experience that requires application of knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. (This position is part of the series that range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.) In addition to meeting the IOR above, you must meet the experience/education as described below: GS-07 Specialized Experience: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Major body systems, i.e. skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive and genitourinary, to perform patient examination and to provide prompt and efficient patient care and appropriate patient handling. Topographic anatomy, i.e. right/left, surface, proximal/distal, superior, inferior, to accurately transmit location information about the body. Diagnostic signs, e.g., pulse, respiration, blood pressure, temperature, skin color, pupils of the eyes, state of consciousness, ability to move on command, reaction to pain, etc., to perform patient examination, initial assessment of condition, provide patient care, and to ensure appropriate patient handling. Emergency medicine techniques to determine, based on analysis of the patient's condition, the approach that will most effectively sustain the patient's life. This is typically evidenced by certification in BCLS, ACLS, ITLS, and/or ATLS or equivalent. Emergency communication techniques and the operation of communications equipment so as to be able to accurately obtain and relay information to and from health care providers. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate level education in a degree program directly related to the work of the position. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond graduate degree. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Preferred Experience: Experience in the military as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, Medical Technician is highly desired.
