Job Description

NIST is looking for a visionary Statistical Metrologist to push the boundaries of measurement science. In this role, you won't just analyze data, you will advance the state-of-the-art in foundational and applied statistics to support the very core of the NIST mission. This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

**Qualifications:**
Basic Requirements: A. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level (ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as: Experience in statistical experiment design and the development and validation of linear, nonlinear, Bayesian, machine learning, artificial intelligence (including neural networks and uncertainty characterization), or hierarchical models. Experience in exploratory data analysis, preprocessing complex datasets, and creating graphical visualizations to communicate results. Experience with statistical inference (hypothesis testing/intervals) and the development of software tools or packages for research applications. OR Master's or equivalent degree OR A combination of education and experience Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
